Teacher FAQ Q: How do I plan a
trip to Camp Cosby’s Outdoor Classroom?
A: The first step would be to review the
Important
Planning Points and/or contact
Tyler or
Gwen. Be prepared
to answer questions regarding the estimated size of your
group and the time of year you would like to attend.
Q: What are cabins like?
A: All cabins are equipped with heating and air
conditioning, have the bathrooms and showers inside, and
have carpeting. The cabins are also equipped with bunk beds,
but participants need to supply their own bedding, including
a pillow.
Q: What should I/need to bring?
A: Click here for a
suggested packing list
Q: Who stays in the cabins with the students?
A: Supervision of students in cabins is done by Chaperones
and/or Teachers. It is up to the Lead Teacher to determine
who stays in the cabins (mostly guided by School policy).
Teachers are provided with their own cabins if needed.
Q: Do I need to divide my students into groups for the
trip?
A: Yes! After coordinating your trip with a representative
from The Outdoor Classroom, you will be assigned “Trail
Groups”. The number of Trail Groups will depend on the
number of students your school has, as well as the number of
Naturalists available during your visit. The Lead Teacher
then divides the students up into the number of Trail
Groups. Many teachers make nametags for their students that
include their Trail Group number and/or the cabin they are
assigned to.
Q: Who decides where the students sleep?
A: The Lead Teacher. After coordinating the trip with a
representative from The Outdoor Classroom, you will be told
what cabins will be made available for your school group. It
is up to the Lead Teacher to assign students with their
cabins. Remember! No boys in girl’s cabins and no girls in
boy’s cabins! Moms can’t sleep in the same cabin as their
son, and Dads can’t sleep in the same cabin as their
daughter.
Q: Can students bring a cell phone?
A: Students are not allowed to bring any electronics to Camp
Cosby’s Outdoor Classroom including cell phones. Students
have access to Camp phones 24 hours a day, and can call
their parents any time they need to. Parents can also
contact their child any time of day or night by calling: 1
(800) 85 COSBY during business hours, or our emergency pager
at: (205) 865-1761 after hours. Remember though! The pager
is only carried by Camp Cosby staff after business hours and
should only be used for emergencies!
Q: What happens if it rains?
A: Almost all of The Outdoor Classrooms 46 classes occur
outside, rain or shine! It is important that students be
prepared and pack accordingly. Click here for a
suggested packing list. Of course, if safety becomes an issue, we move
classes to sheltered areas. We have our very own weather
satellite monitoring system that we continuously monitor. At
the first sign of hazardous weather, we move students to
safety. To operate The Outdoor Classroom for over 30 years,
safety has to be our top priority!
Q: Who watches over the students?
A: For the majority of the stay, The Outdoor Classroom
Naturalists are in charge of the students. Each child is
assigned to a “Trail Group” which is led by a Naturalist,
and accompanied by Chaperones. Teachers are encouraged to
stay with a Trail Group, or move from one Trail Group to
another, observing as many Trail Groups as possible. At no
time is a child allowed to be without an adult while at Camp
Cosby.

Q: How does a parent contact a child in an emergency?
A: Students have access to Camp phones 24 hours a day, and
can call their parents any time they need to. If a parent
needs to contact their child any time of day or night, all
they have to do is call 1 (800) 85 COSBY during business
hours, or the emergency pager at: (205) 865-1761 after
hours. Remember though! The pager is only carried by Camp
Cosby staff after business hours and should only be used for
emergencies! |
