Parent FAQ Q: What are cabins
like?
A: All cabins are equipped with heating and air
conditioning, have the bathrooms and showers inside, and
have carpeting. The cabins are also equipped with bunk beds,
but participants need to supply their own bedding, including
a pillow.
Q: What should I/need to bring?
A: Click here for a
suggested packing list
Q: Who is in the cabins with the students?
A: Chaperones and/or teachers attending the trip are
assigned to cabins with the students and are responsible for
the students at all times while in the cabins.
Q: Can my child bring a cell phone?
A: Students are not allowed to bring any electronics to Camp
Cosby’s Outdoor Classroom including cell phones. Students
have access to Camp phones 24 hours a day, and can call you
any time they need to. If you need to contact your child any
time of day or night, all you have to do is call 1 (800) 85
COSBY during business hours, or our emergency pager at:
(205) 865-1761 after hours. Remember though! The pager is
only carried by Camp Cosby staff after business hours and
should only be used for emergencies!
Q: Should I pack snacks for my child?
A: NO! Depending on the length of your school’s stay,
students will enjoy one or more of our wonderful breakfasts,
lunches, and/or dinner’s! Each meal is “all you can eat”,
and we even offer visits to our Camp Store where students
can choose between a variety of snacks. We do not allow any
food or drinks (except for water) into our cabins though.
This insures that all of the creatures we study in the
Outdoor Classroom stay outside!
Q: What happens if it rains?
A: Almost all of The Outdoor Classrooms 46 classes occur
outside, rain or shine! It is important that students be
prepared and pack accordingly.
suggested packing list. Of course, if safety becomes an
issue, we move classes to sheltered areas. We have our very
own weather satellite monitoring system that we continuously
monitor. At the first sign of hazardous weather, we move
students to safety. To operate The Outdoor Classroom for
over 30 years, safety has to be our top priority!
Q: Who watches over my child?
A: For the majority of your child’s stay, The Outdoor
Classroom Naturalists are in charge of your child. Each
child is assigned to a “Trail Group” which is led by a
Naturalist, as well as Chaperones for the school trip. The
school’s teachers are also present, and at no time is a
child allowed to be without an adult. Naturalists are
professional environmental educators that have undergone
extensive training and background checks.

Naturalists, click here.
Q: How do I contact my child in an emergency?
A: Students have access to Camp phones 24 hours a day, and
can call you any time they need to. If you need to contact
your child any time of day or night, all you have to do is
call 1 (800) 85 COSBY during business hours, or our
emergency pager at: (205) 865-1761 after hours. Remember
though! The pager is only carried by Camp Cosby staff after
business hours and should only be used for emergencies!
Q: What if my child gets injured at Camp?
A: Schools are required to provide their own Nurse to attend
to and administer First Aid. Sometimes this will be a School
Nurse, but more often, it is a Chaperone who is a certified
RN, EMT, MD, etc. and who has agreed to the responsibilities
for the trip. If a student requires medical attention, they
are transported to Citizen’s BMC Hospital in Talladega by a
chaperone, or by EMS.
Q: What if I want to be a Chaperone?
A: GREAT! We would love to have you! It’s a fantastic
opportunity to watch your child have so much fun while
learning! But arrangements do need to be made through the
Lead Teacher for the school. Contact your child’s school to
get more information on how to attend!
